Subscriptions in checkout
Context: Integrating checkout with an ecosystem of apps
Subscriptions aren’t available to merchants out of the box — they require an app to enable recurring purchases on Shopify. Checkout is the critical surface where the app ecosystem and Shopify meet, and it must feel seamless. Buyers should experience a cohesive, uninterrupted flow without being aware of the underlying app or platform integrations.
Design challenge
Shopify’s checkout is intentionally rigid. It is a tightly structured surface built for speed, clarity, and trust at the point of sale. Within these constraints, I designed a system of extension points and reusable patterns to balance merchant flexibility in branding and identity with buyer needs for a clear, consistent, and trustworthy subscription checkout experience.
