Collaboration with Corporación Cultural Nuestra Gente

This project emerged from a collaboration with a community based organization in Medell√≠n, Colombia. In an area of rapid urban change, residents of Comuna 2 consistently felt top-down urban planning pressures that never addressed their local needs or valued their history.

Process & Outcomes

I worked on a team of three researchers and designers to complete two intensive weeks of fieldwork and research sprints to inform our design and engagement model. Seeing as our community based organization was a theatre organization, it was important for us and the community to develop a tool that used the power of design, movement, and expression to bring people together.

The tool consists of a walking tour, a physical installation, and a DIY manual. First, participants walk on a specific street of interest. The physical installation details the physical features of that particular street. Layers provide a place for recording underrepresented narratives and memories that may not necessarily be evident yet are deeply important to the character of the community. The DIY manual serves as an instruction manual for the organizer and participant.
